ARGENTINA A novel idea for dealing with inflation

The government is under pressure from orthodox economists to rein in the rate of economic growth in order to prevent hyper-inflation setting in. The pressure has got to the president of the Banco Central de Argentina, Mercedes Marcó del Pont, who admits that prices are “taut" but argues that it would be wrong to try to cool down the economy. As this is an election year, any moves by policymakers to temper the still-only-flickering national feel-good factor are unlikely.
